Very Simple Pie Crust

It's pie season! So what's your poison? Warm and gooey apple pie, swimming in cinnamon and brown sugar? Or is it the earthy and sweet pumpkin pie, brimming with fresh clove and nutmeg, topped with fresh whipped cream. Whatever it is, it's always better with homemade crust, right? This very simple pie crust recipe was used for my Pi Day pie.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 Stick cold unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (for sweet pies)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup ice cold water

Instructions

  • Sift one cup of flour, 1 teaspoon of sugar and 1 teaspoon salt in a large mixing bowl. If you’re making a quiche, for example, leave the sugar out.
  • Cut 1 stick of unsalted butter into eight equal parts and add it to the flour.
  • Cut in the butter using a pastry cutter, two knifes or even a stand mixer. Do not over work the dough. It should like like corn meal when finished.
  • Slowly add in 1/4 cup of ice cold water, bringing the mixture into a dough ball. Once again, do not over work it.
  • Wrap the dough ball in plastic and place in the refrigerator for about an hour before using.
  • Now you are ready to to make some yummy pie! Like this yummy Blueberry & Thyme pie I made for Pi Day.
