If you aren’t familiar with this term, the aril is that lovely red jewel-like seed casing that has all the juice. Though many refer to the whole thing as the seed, it is not. Another common aril is the nutmeg aril, in which the spice mace is harvested from. But yes, we do not want to waste them! That is where all the juice is!
To start with, we need to break open that pomegranate. This is no easy task. If you do it wrong, your kitchen is going to look like a scene from the movie Saw. Many just slice the thing in half but I like to harvest as many of those tasty arils as possible so here is what I do. I score the fruit’s outside perimeter and crack it open.
Fill a large bowl with water and soak the pomegranate pieces in there. This will soften the white pulp part and make it easy to remove.
Once they have softened, break the pomegranate pieces down into smaller and smaller chunks, removing the arils from the pulp under the water. The pulp will float to the top of the water and the seeds will sink.
Scoop out the pulp from the water and then strain the arils.
Remove any remaining pieces of pulp from the arils and enjoy!
