DIY Lemon Thyme Disinfectant (Vinegar Based)

I am going to be honest. I really hate food waste. So I am always on the hunt for creative ways to get just a little bit more out of the food I buy, like this DIY lemon thyme disinfectant made with vinegar.

That doesn’t always mean you have to eat the food!

DIY Lemon Thyme Disinfectant

Take this disinfectant for example. I made it with lemons that I first zested for homemade lemon pepper, then I juiced them for a spicy lemonade, all to end up here in this cleaner. I had a bunch of thyme left over too from a recent trip to the farmers market. So I threw that in also. Here is the recipe:

  • Lemon rinds
  • Thyme
  • White vinegar

Funny thing, many o green blogs talk about how great of a cleaner vinegar is. It isn’t. It’s great for disinfectant but as a straight up cleaner, it sucks. There are many green options that work; vinegar isn’t one of them. But don’t take my word for it. Check out this study from the Journal of Environmental Health. Still, vinegar still has a place in home cleaning.

This stuff is great at killing bacteria.

Don’t use it on marble or granite. It’s highly acidic and can f*ck up the finish. The solution is great for other green cleaning options. Add 1 part vinegar, 4 parts water, and a couple tablespoons of borax and you have a great disinfecting home cleaner. As you will note from that study, borax gets the job done!

Enjoy! And remember, there are so many ways to fight food waste.
